Neighborhood Guide

Midtown West

The midtown area west of Fifth Avenue from 34th to 59th Street is an exciting area filled with beautiful Art Nouveau facades, Art Deco movie houses, refurbished Broadway theaters, towering theme stores, and trendy restaurants. The core of Manhattan, it draws crowds morning, noon and night to its stores, lights, billboards, and shows. Midtown West has emerged as a perfect example of a desirable, trendy, vibrant neighborhood that has it all.

While the area is mainly filled with large commercial buildings, there are still some residential buildings. Amidst all the luxury hotels on Central Park South sits several high end co-ops and condos with amazing views of the luscious greens. Other notable buildings include The Metropolitan Tower, a stunning glass tower and CitySpire, another mixed-use tower. These two towers dramatically transformed the midtown skyline.

Further south is Rockefeller Center and Times Square Area. What was once a rundown neighborhood has been cleaned up into a very presentable and lively residential district, thanks to Mayor Rudolph Giuliani. Chances are your rent or mortgage will not be as high as in most other neighborhoods in the city. The east side of Manhattan may be slightly more elegant and neater than the west side, but when it comes to energy at the heart of the city’s cauldron, West Midtown wins easily. If you're trying to get into theater, as you're close to all your audition spots (and tons of restaurants, where you might have to work temporarily until you land your big role).

This place is for the young and the strong. It's great if you're looking for a smack-you-in-the-face New York experience. This is where New Yorkers and non-New Yorkers collide.
